Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress: Synopsis

(The Oonai Capture Elric and Moonglum)
Book One: The Torment of the Last Lord
  1. Pale Prince On A Moonlit Shore: In pursuit of Theleb K’aarna, Elric and Moonglum arrive by Tarkeshite ship to the southern territory of Lormyr, from which once came the legendary hero Earl Aubec (“Master of Chaos”). It was also the first of the Young Kingdoms to declare independence from the Melnibonéan Empire. They head toward Iosaz, the capitol.
  2. White Face Staring Through Snow: Elric and Moonglum are attacked by shape-shifting, flying Oonai (which previously served Melniboné, but are now seemingly controlled by Theleb K’aarna). Elric calls on Arioch, but he appears only to offer his blessing, citing more important matters elsewhere in the Chaos planes (possibly a reference to Corum's adventures?). Despite killing a couple of the Oonai (which then revert back into black pig-like creatures), the pair are captured and borne into the sky.
  3. Feathers Filling A Great Sky: Elric calls on Fileet, Lady of the Birds. Swarms of birds appear and kill the Oonai, and carry the heroes to the ground, dropping them in the middle of a snowy wilderness near World’s Edge (but farther away from their desired destination of Iosaz)..
  4. Old Castle Standing Alone: They eventually find a castle, stocked with food. In another room lies a woman, asleep from a sorcerous spell. Reminded of Cymoril and unable to help the woman, a disturbed Elric quickly departs, while Moonglum finds a map.
  5. Doomed Lord Dreaming: In Alorasaz, a trading town, the pair spend the night. Elric is woken by a vision of the sleeping woman from the castle, who introduces herself as Myshella, Empress of the Dawn and the Dark Lady of Kaneloon (from “Master of Chaos”). She had been the one who sent the Oonai in order to bring him to her at Castle Kaneloon, to help her in her struggle against Theleb K’aarna and the Chaos servant Prince Umbda, with his Kelmain Host. She asks Elric to obtain a pouch from her other home, Ashaneloon, in the Boiling Sea, and bring it to her castle.
  6. Jeweled Bird Speaking: Elric mounts a gift from Myshella, a gold/silver/brass bird, which flies him to the palace of Ashaneloon. There, Elric uses Stormbringer to defeat a red-eyed, horned, scaled guardian demon, placed by Theleb K’aarna. Obtaining the pouch required by Myshella (as well as the pulsing stone heart of the defeated demon), Elric heads back to Castle Kaneloon on the metal bird.
  7. Black Wizard Laughing: Back at Kaneloon, Elric is greeted by Moonglum, as he sees Prince Umbda’s army approaching in the distance. Elric uses the demon’s stone heart (a Nanorion stone) in a spell to try and awaken Myshella. Raiders attack the castle and Elric is forced to engage Prince Umbda’s Kelmain Host. Eventually Stormbringer’s appetite is sated, and stops providing Elric with strength, despite further bloodshed. Elric is struck unconscious and captured.
  8. A Great Host Screaming: Elric calls the discarded Stormbringer to free him as Myshella arrives on the metal bird to take him back to Kaneloon castle. On the way, Myshella spreads sorcerous dust in a circle around the invading army, creating a “Noose of Flesh”. Soon, a fleshy barrier grows and contracts over the army, killing Umbda and seemingly Theleb K’aarna as well. As a reward, Myshella gives Elric a vision of “what he desires most”, but Elric screams in horror. However, later in Myshella’s private quarters, Elric finds some relief.

Book Two: To Snare The Pale Prince
  1. The Beggar Court: Theleb K’aarna, having escaped Myshella’s “Noose of Flesh”, visits King Urish in Nadsokor, the City of Beggars. He seeks Urish’s help against Elric, who had once long ago stolen a scroll from Urish’s treasure hoard.
  2. The Stolen Ring: Wearied by the events of the previous book, Elric decides to head for Tanelorn as a respite from his quest for vengeance. In a tavern located at Old Hrolmar in Vilmir (ruled by Duke Avan Astran, at this point deceased according to The Jade Man's Eyes/The Sailor On the Seas of Fate), Elric and Moonglum become involved in sordid altercations involving a drunken dandy, whores and hired assassins. Elric is knocked out by a poisoned blade, and wakes to find that one of the whores (following Urish’s orders) has stolen off with his Actorios Ring, an important source of Elric's sorcerous power.
  3. The Cold Ghouls: Elric and Moonglum sneak into Nadsokor under disguise. When they enter Urish’s throne room, they are ambushed by Theleb K’aarna’s sorcerous ghouls, who suck all of the heat from Elric’s body, leaving him helpless.
  4. Punishment of the Burning God: Thrown into a labyrinth, Elric is offered as a sacrifice to Checkalakh, the Burning God, imprisoned there by the Lords of Law. With Stormbringer’s aid, Elric is able to kill Checkalakh, but the Chaos god’s consumed life force threatens to burn out Elric’s mortal shell. Lord Donblas of Law briefly appears and soothes Elric's burning energy. After escaping the labyrinth Elric finds Moonglum and they return to Urish’s throne room where they encounter a scaly, green-black guardian demon. Unable to defeat the demon by force, they decide in the meantime to pursue Urish and Theleb K’aarna, who have left Nadsokor to intercept and destroy Rackhir the Red Archer’s caravan on its way back to Tanelorn. On the way out, Elric and Moonglum kill a few more hostile beggar soldiers.
  5. Things Which Are Not Women: Reaching Rackhir’s caravan, Elric and Moonglum help him fight off King Urish’s beggar army. However, Theleb K’aarna conjures up an army of Elenoin, inhuman red-haired female warriors "from the 8th plane" (and ancient foes of Melniboné). Using the last of his strength, Elric summons the Grahluk, the ape-like natural enemies of the Elenoin. While the Grahluk destroy the Elenoin (and then themselves), Urish and Theleb K’aarna apparently flee back to Nadsokor.
  6. The Jesting Demon: Returning to King Urish’s throne room, Elric and his friends arrive to see Urish attack the guardian demon. The demon swallows Urish whole, and then turns into Arioch, who had taken the place of the demon during Elric's absence. Arioch taunts them and departs, after which Elric retrieves his Actorios Ring from the hoard under the throne. Rackhir convinces Elric to abandon his pursuit of Theleb K’aarna and journey to Tanelorn with him.

Book Three: Three Heroes With A Single Aim
  1. Tanelorn Eternal: After a month in peaceful Tanelorn, Elric still feels restless. He decides to ride into the Sighing Desert to the north.
  2. Return of A Sorceress: Riding into the desert half-intending to die, he his met by Myshella and her metal flying bird. Myshella tells him that Theleb K’aarna is nearby, and that he has found technology left over from the long-extinct Doomed Folk of the Forest of Troos (see “Kings in Darkness”). With this technology he plans to attack Tanelorn in the name of Chaos. Elric reluctantly agrees to confront Theleb K’aarna and save Tanelorn.
  3. The Barrier Broken: Elric finds Theleb K’aarna conjuring up giant reptilian allies (from Pio) using a giant amorphous device enclosed in a glass bowl (somewhat reminiscent of Dark Empire technology). When Elric attacks the bowl, he is transported to a forest on another plane, and meets Corum, Prince of the Scarlet Robe. They ride towards a “vanishing tower” to rescue one of Corum’s friends.
  4. The Vanishing Tower: The two run into a third incarnation of the Champion Eternal, Erekosë, and together head towards the future site of Voilodion Ghagnasdiak’s time and dimension-hopping “vanishing tower”. They wait at the bottom of a cursed pass for the tower to materialize.
  5. Jhary-a-Conel: When the tower appears, the trio quickly enters it to confront Voilodion Ghagnasdiak, a handsome dwarf. Voilodion Ghagnasdiak conjures up armed, winged tiger-men, which the heroes are hard-pressed to fend off until Elric realizes that the tiger-men can only be harmed by their own blades. Nonetheless, the heroes are still worn down by the unending army until Jhary-a-Conel appears with Whiskers, his flying cat (which blinds the evil dwarf). On his advice, the three heroes link arms to multiply their power. With the battle won, the tower begins to come unhinged. Jhary-A-Conel leads them down to Voilodion Ghagnasdiak’s treasure vault where he retrieves the Runestaff (and his hat). He gives Elric sheets of bronze and quartz spears to use against Theleb K’aarna back in his own world. The Runestaff takes the quartet back to the Sighing Desert, after which they head towards Theleb K’aarna’s dimensional machine in order to destroy it.
  6. Pale Lord Shouting In Sunlight: Jhary-a-Conel, Corum and Erekosë depart using the bowl-shaped dimensional machine. Elric then destroys it, after which he heads back to Tanelorn. There, he finds that Theleb K’aarna has captured Myshella. Rackhir takes the bronze sheets and Elric, using Myshella’s metal bird, flies to confront Theleb K’aarna’s. The Pan Tang sorcerer's reptilian allies from Pio use their flame weapons on Tanelorn, but the bronze sheets create a force field which brings protection. Elric kills the reptile men with the quartz spears, but Theleb K’aarna fatally wounds Myshella and conjures an escape. With her dying breath, Myshella warns Elric that the forces of Chaos will be stronger now without her efforts in the name of Law.
