I. The Jewel In The Skull (1967)

Book One
  1. Count Brass: While inspecting his domain, Count Brass, Lord Guardian of the Kamarg, fights and defeats a monstrous baragoon, using guile and skill.
  2. Yisselda and Bowgentle: Returning to Castle Brass, the Count greets his daughter Yisselda and his elderly poet friend Bowgentle, who tries to warn Brass of the dangers presented by the expanding Dark Empire of Granbretan.
  3. Baron Meliadus: At a bullfight, Count Brass comes to the aid of a wounded bullfighter. Back at the castle, Baron Meliadus, a wolf-headed lord of the Dark Empire arrives, and proposes an alliance, which Brass resists. Meliadus shows attraction for Yisselda.
  4. The Fight At Castle Brass: Meliadus tries to kidnap Yisselda and injures Bowgentle. Count Brass defeats Meliadus in a duel, after which Meliadus is forced to depart, promising vengeance.
Book Two
  1. Dorian Hawkmoon: Dorian Hawkmoon of Koln, a captured resistance leader against Granbretan (and former hero of Koln) is brought to Londra, as Baron Meliadus devises a plan against Castle Brass.
  2. The Bargain: When Hawkmoon appears strangely listless in the face of Meliadus’ request to help him with his conquests, Hawkmoon is sent to Baron Kalan, a scientist, for examination. Kalan finds nothing wrong aside from the missing spirit of the “old” Duke of Koln. Later, Hawkmoon agrees to retrieve Yisselda from Castle Brass, in order to get his kingdom back in return.
  3. The Black Jewel: Baron Kalan uses a strange machine to implant the Black Jewel into Hawkmoon’s forehead, giving Kalan the ability to see what Hawkmoon sees. Hawkmoon and Meliadus meet Huon, the king of Granbretan, preserved over 3000 years.
  4. Journey to Castle Brass: Hawkmoon journeys across the Dark Empire wearing the wolfmask of Meliadus. At one point he glimpses a warrior in Jet and Gold.
  5. The Awakening of Hawkmoon: Hawkmoon is treated kindly by Count Brass, Yisselda and Bowgentle, none of whom suspect his true mission. At a banquet, a recitation from Bowgentle causes Hawkmoon to pass out. Over the next few days, Count Brass manages to temporarily suppress the power of the Black Jewel, so that they can decide what to do next. Hawkmoon’s unspoken feelings for Yisselda bring him out of his listless state as well.
  6. The Battle of the Kamarg: With the Black Jewel temporarily neutralized, Meliadus leads a Granbretan force towards the Kamarg. Count Brass and Hawkmoon devise a plan of defense. Later, Hawkmoon intercepts the approaching force and deprives it of its river transport by diverting the river’s course. While Meliadus deals with the now-dry river, Hawkmoon raids his camp and steals the King’s staff. Hawkmoon’s guerilla attacks funnel Meliadus’ forces towards Castle Brass’ most fortified position. At his stronghold, Count Brass uses freezing globes and mind-blasting technology to cause disarray in the Granbretan army. After a long, heated battle, Meliadus retreats. Afterwards, Yisselda yields herself to Hawkmoon, and asks him to seek a permanent cure for his Black Jewel in distant Hamadan in Persia.
Book Three
  1. Oladahn: While flying to Persia, Hawkmoon’s flamingo is shot down by the hybrid dwarf-giant Oladahn. When some brigands approach and try to rob them, Oladahn uses sorcery to mesmerize the brigands and capture their goats, so that he and Hawkmoon can escape.
  2. The Caravan of Agonosvos: Weeks later, with the Black Jewel’s power becoming stronger, the pair run across a caravan of freaks led by Agonosvos, an ancient, exiled sorcerer of Koln. Agonosvos betrays his nominal ruler and attempts to deliver him to Meliadus, but Oladahn comes to Hawkmoon’s rescue and knocks off the wizard’s helm. The corpse-like sorcerer escapes, vowing vengeance. Using Agonosvos’ steeds, Hawkmoon and Oladahn ride to the coast.
  3. The Warrior In Jet And Gold: The pair are attacked by Granbretan soldiers and are almost overcome. However, the mysterious Warrior in Jet and Gold appears and saves them. He joins their party for a time.
  4. Malagigi: They reach Hamadan. With the city under attack by Meliadus’ wolf troops, Hawkmoon locates Malagigi, a sorcerer who he hopes can free him from the Black Jewel’s power. Meliadus appears and the heroes are forced to flee, killing a giant bat in the process. Rendezvousing with Hamadan’s defending ruler, Queen Frawbra, he rallies her troops so that they can return and retake the city.
  5. The Black Jewel’s Life: With Frawbra, the Warrior in Jet and Gold and Oladahn, Hawkmoon fights his way back into Hamadan and to Malagigi’s house. Malagigi demands that Hawkmoon free the city before he will deactivate the Black Jewel. Later, Hawkmoon finds Meliadus, who threatens to unleash the Black Jewel’s power. Oladahn gives Hawkmoon the helm of Agonosvos, which blocks Meliadus’ power over the Jewel. In a long duel Hawkmoon almost defeats Meliadus, but faints at the last moment.
  6. Servant of the Runestaff: Hawkmoon wakes up and learns that Meliadus had also fainted, but later disappeared. The Warrior in Jet and Gold tells Malagigi that Hawkmoon serves the Runestaff, and Malagigi deactivates the Black Jewel. Hawkmoon and Oladahn head back towards Castle Brass.

II. The Mad God's Amulet (1968)

Book One
  1. Soryandum: In the deserted old city of Soryandum, Hawkmoon and Oladahn try to rest, but Oladahn soon vanishes, and Hawkmoon sees a Granbretan ornithopter in the sky.
  2. Huillam D’Averc: The Granbretan Frenchman Huillam D’Averc lands and brings out Oladahn, issuing an ultimatum to Hawkmoon. Hawkmoon duels with D’Averc but, weakened by his journey, is eventually captured.
  3. The Wraith-Folk: Hawkmoon and Oladahn are imprisoned by D’Averc. Later, they are rescued by the now-incorporeal inhabitants of Soryandum, led by Rinal. Rinal asks Hawkmoon to help them fight the Granbretan forces by retrieving two devices from a distant storage area, guarded by a mechanical beast.
  4. The Mechanical Beast: Finding the secret cave, Hawkmoon battles the mechanical ape guardian. With the aid of one of the weapons in the storage room, Hawkmoon blinds the robot long enough to obtain the devices Rinal desired and escapes. The blinded creature is unable to find Hawkmoon, and Hawkmoon returns to Soryandum.
  5. The Machine: After returning to Rinal’s hideout, D’Averc’s men try to recapture them. Rinal uses one of the devices delivered by Hawkmoon to transport Soryandum away to another dimension, leaving Hawkmoon and D’Averc behind. The mechanical guardian beast arrives and begins engaging D’Averc’s men, so Hawkmoon and Oladahn use the confusion to escape the city, retaining the remaining trans-dimension machine.
  6. Mad God’s Ship: Hawkmoon and Oladahn board a ship, and later end up rescuing Huillam D’Averc at sea, who had escaped the ape-robot, but whose raft had drifted out to sea. Hawkmoon takes D’Averc as his hostage, but the ship is soon approached by a ship manned by the Mad God’s Cult, and they prepare for battle.
  7. The Ring On The Finger: Hawkmoon, Oladahn and D’Averc engage the maniacal pirates and escape by swinging over to the pirates’ own ship when they have boarded Hawkmoon’s own ship. After killing the remaining pirates, they discover an amputated hand wearing Yisselda’s ring, and learn that the pirates had all been drugged into fighting. They decide to wait for the ringleader to appear.
  8. Mad God’s Man: They ambush the ringleader, Shagarov, and learn that the women who had been captured by the pirates were delivered to the Mad God. They execute Shagarov and escape in a skiff, as the pirate ship burns behind them.
Book Two
  1. The Waiting Warrior: Hawkmoon and his party run into the Warrior in Jet and Gold, who tells Hawkmoon that, besides rescuing Yisselda,  he must also obtain the Red Amulet from the Mad God. He leads them towards the Mad God’s castle.
  2. The Mad God’s Castle: The quartet cross the mysterious, glowing Throbbing Bridge and approach the Mad God’s black castle. They are attacked by an army of women, and use nets to capture them without killing them.
  3. Hawkmoon’s Dilemma: Hawkmoon enters the castle and finds the shriveled, insane Mad God, named Stalnikov. An entranced, armored Yisselda appears and attacks Hawkmoon until Hawkmoon forces Stalnikov to lift the enchantment on Yisselda. Hawkmoon kills Stalnikov.
  4. The Power of the Amulet: As Hawkmoon reunites with Yisselda, Granbretan troops approach. The Warrior in Jet and Gold urges a reluctant Hawkmoon to don the Red Amulet. Suspiciously, Hawkmoon finally puts it on and is filled with power.
  5. The Slaughter In the Hall: Hawkmoon makes short work of the Granbretan invaders and his party move outdoors. There they are confronted by another Dark Empire pack, and Hawkmoon uses the power of the Red Amulet to command the Mad God’s entranced female warriors to attack the Granbretan forces.
  6. The Mad God’s Beasts: The Warrior In Jet and Gold leads the troupe to a stable where they find giant mutant cats. With the Red Amulet, Hawkmoon commands the cats to draw a chariot so that they can escape. The Warrior in Jet and Gold, however, seemingly disappears with Rinal’s dimensional device.
  7. Encounter In A Tavern: Hawkmoon’s party disguise themselves and rest in Zorvanemi. There, they dispatch a group of rowdy Dark Empire soldiers and take their armor in order to travel with more ease.
  8. The Dark Empire Camp: The group are forced to pass through a large Dark Empire encampment in their new disguises. Unfortunately D’Averc betrays them to Baron Meliadus.
  9. The Journey South: Baron Meliadus has them chained, and transports them towards the Kamarg in order to have them witness the final destruction of Castle Brass.
  10. The Fall of the Kamarg: Arriving at the border walls of the Kamarg, the heroes watch as the Dark Empire forces wear down the Kamarg’s defenses. D’Averc secretly frees them and they eventually reach Castle Brass. Their arrival resuscitates Count Brass’ spirit and they ride to the border wall just in time to see it fall.
  11. Return of the Warrior: Count Brass, Hawkmoon and Oladahn lead the remaining Kamarg troops against the invading Dark Empire army. When invoking the Runestaff, the Red Amulet gives Hawkmoon enough strength to temporarily rout the enemy. Hawkmoon and Yisselda quickly marry the next morning. Eventually the Warrior in Jet and Gold arrives, bearing Rinal’s dimensional device, which he had been safe-keeping.
  12. Escape To Limbo: Castle Brass and the hill it sits on disappears to a parallel dimension and Meliadus is forced to depart empty-handed. In a multi-colored limbo, Hawkmoon expects that he will eventually have to return to the real world to fight Granbretan again.

  2. Human Thoughts of the Countess Flana: Flana pines for D’Averc, but admits Meliadus for an audience.
  3. Hawkmoon Alters His Course: On the way to Europe (and disobeying the Runestaff’s wishes to go to Dnark), Hawkmoon’s ship is surrounded by strange clouds and then flying monsters.
  4. Orland Fank: The flying reptiles force Hawkmoon’s ship to a small island where they meet Orland Fank (spiritual brother to the Warrior in Jet and Gold), who tells them that he has a boat for them to go to Dnark, as per the Runestaff’s wishes.
  5. A City of Glowing Shadows: Hawkmoon and D’Averc eventually arrive at a beautiful city, seemingly made of organic material, but deserted (except for weird moving shadows). They enter a cylindrical structure in the center of the city.
  6. Jehamia Cohnahlias: They meet an angelic Asian boy who tells them that they are in Dnark in Amarekh, home of the Runestaff. The boy (Jehamia Cohnahlias) seems to be familiar with D’Averc’s artistic work. He names the shadows the Great Good Ones.
  7. A Well-Known Traveler: They are brought to a dining room where they encounter Shenegar Trott, who tries to rationalize the conquests of Granbretan in front of the boy. Cohnahlias asks that they put their differences aside.
  8. An Ultimatum: The next morning Trott invades the city and captures Cohnahlias. As Trott forces Cohnalias to lead him to the Runestaff, the Great Good Ones whisk Hawkmoon and D’Averc to safety.
  9. The Runestaff: The Great Good Ones bring Hawkmoon and D’Averc to the hall of the Runestaff, just as Trott arrives with Cohnalias. A stalemate ensues, until the Warrior in Jet and Black and Orland Fank suddenly appear.
  10. The Spirit of the Runestaff: Cohnahlias turns incorporeal and flows into the Runestaff. Fank reveals that the boy was actually the spirit of the Runestaff. Hawkmoon summons the unkillable Warriors of the Dawn, but when he is knocked down from behind, the Warriors fade away.
  11. A Brother Slain: Hawkmoon recovers and again summons the Warriors of the Dawn, but the Warrior in Jet and Gold is slain by Shenegar Trott. Hawkmoon eventually kills Trott and the Granbretans are defeated. Cohnalias briefly reappears to tell Hawkmoon that he must take the Runestaff back home with him as a standard. Orland Fank weeps over the loss of his brother the Warrior, and the fact that Jehamia Cohnalias has to depart with Hawkmoon (inside the Runestaff). He thinks that Jehamiah may be his son, or possibly himself.
Book Two
  1. Whispering In Secret Rooms: Baron Meliadus obtains Flana’s cooperation in deposing Emperor Huon, although she prefers to think about D’Averc.

  7. The Beasts Begin To Squabble: Meliadus’ forces begin destroying the army barracks on the waterfront housing soldiers loyal to King Huon.
  8. Taragorm’s Invention: As Meliadus’ invasion proceeds with apparent ease, Taragorm reveals to Meliadus a huge clock-device which will bring Castle Brass back within a few hours. The striking of its hourly bell will produce a massive vibration in a target dimension. Taragorm tells Meliadus that Hawkmoon will be recalled at midnight.
  9. Huon Confers With His Captains: Huon feels inconvenienced by Meliadus’ revolt and tells his generals to recall his forces from outside the capitol in order to rescue his rule.
  10. Almost Midnight: Meliadus is unable to immediately capture Huon’s palace, but he hurries to Taragorm’s Palace of Time, hoping that with the anticipated return of Castle Brass, he will be able to rally the Granbretans to his side.
Book Three
  1. The Striking of the Clock: Hawkmoon and his friends discuss a campaign of guerilla attacks on the Dark Empire, but their plans are thrown awry by a series of 12 destructive gong-vibrations (strikes of Taragorm’s clock at midnight), which shatters parts of the castle and causes great pain. Eventually the vibrations shatter the dimensional “anchor” crystal (Rinal’s gift at Soryandum) held in the castle dungeon.
  2. The Blackened Marsh: Hawkmoon and his friends find themselves drawn back to their home dimension, although all they see is a blackened Kamarg. Count Brass vows vengeance on the Dark Empire.

  5. Five Heroes and A Heroine: Yisselda and Bowgentle decide to join the attack party and don Fank’s special helms.
  6. A New Ally: As Meliadus faces second thoughts from Kalan and Taragorm in Londra, Adaz Promp returns from abroad with tales of Hawkmoon’s victories over Shenegar Trott and other Dark Empire forces. With the threat of Hawkmoon and his new-found powers at hand, Promp donates his troops to Meliadus so that Huon’s palace can be taken quickly.
  7. The Battle For Huon’s Palace: Kalan uses a new weapon on Huon’s palace which produces corrosive green bubbles. The bubbles destroy Huon’s barrier walls which allow for Meliadus’ troops to proceed. Eventually the bubble machine self-destructs, killing Taragorm. Meliadus is relieved since Taragorm could have proved dangerous afterwards.
  8. Flana Observes The Battle: Flana pines for D’Averc, as Meliadus’ troops gain entry to Huon’s palace.
  9. The Slaying of King Huon: Meliadus manages to carve his way through Huon’s remaining Mantis guards and smashes Huon’s preservative globe with his broadsword (killing Huon). Unfortunately the preservative liquid splashes Meliadus and he is blinded.
  10. The Heroes Ride Out: Orland Fank meets Hawkmoon’s force and informs them of the civil war in Londra. They decide to make haste to the Dark Empire’s capital to take advantage of the chaos.
  11. News of Several Sorts: Kalan tells Meliadus that his blindness is only temporary, but that his civil war has cost Granbretan half of its fighting force. However, he tells Meliadus that Hawkmoon is approaching with a much smaller force and that the black jewel will soon be reactivated to eat Hawkmoon’s brain.
  12. The New Queen: The lords of Granbretan honor Flana as their new Queen, although privately Flana is convinced that the Dark Empire is doomed.
  13. What Do You See?: Meliadus receives a play-by-play from a soldier as Hawkmoon’s forces approach the Silver Bridge into Londra. He is shocked to hear about the sudden appearance of the Legion of the Dawn. With Hawkmoon victorious on the bridge, Meliadus flies back to Londra to make new plans.
  14. The Power Returns: As Hawkmoon and Count Brass discuss their recent progress, the black jewel in Hawkmoon’s forehead reactivates. Bowgentle is able to temporarily block the evil gem’s pain, but is not sure for how long. They make haste to Londra.
  15. The Gates of Londra: Hawkmoon’s forces engage the Dark Empire in Londra but at great cost. Oladahn, Count Brass, and Bowgentle are killed in the battle, and Hawkmoon is only barely able to stave off the effects of the black jewel with the power of the Red Amulet. Fank has Hawkmoon bring out the Runestaff, and the sight of it rallies his forces and demoralizes the Granbretanian troops. Meanwhile, D’Averc fights his way to Flana in the throne room, but is killed by a guard.
  16. The Final Fight: With a weakened Hawkmoon before him, Meliadus gloats and prepares to make the killing blow. However, Hawkmoon’s reflective helm momentarily distracts Meliadus with his own Wolf’s head reflection, and Hawkmoon manages to strike down the Baron with his last remaining strength.
  17. The Sad Queen: Hawkmoon awakes as Kalan removes the black jewel from him forever. He learns that Queen Flana has decreed peace, and plans to rebuild Europe now that she is ruler. Orland Fank departs with the Runestaff, the Red Amulet and the Sword of the Dawn, and names Hawkmoon as “Champion Eternal”. Hawkmoon and Yisselda, the only other survivors of the battle, depart for Castle Brass, as Flana weeps.
